The Drs: Toddlers Drinking Coffee
The Doctors shared that according to a recent study in Boston, about 15% of 2-year-olds are drinking as much as four ounces of coffee a day. The big question is why?
Dr Travis Stork said if he had to guess, the kids weren’t drinking straight-up coffee, but more likely the milkshake versions of coffee drinks. Dr Stork said coffee isn’t necessarily bad, but caffeine is a stimulant. It’s important to know that there’s nothing wrong with drinking coffee, but 2 years old is too young. Dr Jennifer Ashon explained that there is absolutely no data explaining what caffeine can do to a child that young, but it can obviously disrupt their sleep. Plus, if they’re drinking coffee, they’re not drinking milk.

The Drs: 104-Year-Old Soda Drinking Woman

The Doctors heard about a 104-year-old woman who regularly drinks Dr. Pepper and has outlived her doctors. (brent_nashville / flickr)
The Doctors then shared the story of a woman from Fort Worth who just celebrated her 104th birthday. Elizabeth says she doesn’t need the advice of a real doctor who wouldn’t agree with her habit of drinking Dr Pepper every morning. She’s been enjoying three a day for years and every doctor she sees tell her it will kill her, “but they die and I don’t, so there must be a mistake somewhere.”
The Doctors said that doesn’t mean you should go out and drink soda, but it shows that certain people have some great genes! The soda certainly affected her teeth, but her skin looked great for 104-years-old!

The Drs: Dr Berman Sugar Intervention Update
The Doctors reminded everyone of when they held a sugar intervention for their very own Dr Jennifer Berman. They wanted to wean her off sugar because of how unhealthy her sugar consumption was. Dr Berman shared that it was much harder than she thought, but Zen Foods has been very helpful. She really missed her frozen coffee drinks with whipped cream on top, but instead has been sipping healthy fruit juices throughout the day,
She said she’s sleeping better, is less irritable, and her energy is better. “Now that I’ve broken the habit, why would I go back?” Dr Berman said. The Doctors congratulated her on her progress and she thanked them for forcing her into it. She said she has more sympathy for people with food addictions. She said she’s forgiving herself for making mistakes, but knows how hard it is to do. The hardest part overall though, is starting.
