Dr. Oz said Cancer is one of the most feared diseases, but there are ways that you can lower risk, and he was ready to share ways you could slash your cancer risk.
Kathleen Wolin, a cancer prevention specialist, shared that we finally have a way for people to assess their individual cancer risk. She said the reason it’s important is because it allows people to figure out what they need to do in order to cut their cancer risk by as much as half. She said they’ve been doing studies and following people for decades, and with the accumulation of the evidence, they’ve been able to validate that the tool work. She said it’s a real, evidence-based tool used to lower your cancer risk.

The first cancer Dr. Oz wanted to talk about was stomach cancer, which affects about 8,000 women every year. About half of them pass away, but knowing your risks can save your life. Kathlee Wolin asked everyone in the audience to stand up if they eat at a restaurant two or more times a week. Quite a large number of people stood up. She then asked how many people eat canned food three or more times per week. She then asked everyone to stand if they eat packaged or processed food three or more times a week.
Dr Oz: Lower Salt To Decrease Stomach Cancer Risk
Kathleen Wolin said for the people that answered yes to all three questions, they were three times more at risk for developing stomach cancer. Kathleen explained that all three of those things increase your salt intake, and salt can damage the lining of your stomach, cause abnormal change in the cells that line your stomach, and also makes you stomach more susceptible to infection. To slash your risk for stomach cancer, eat less salt.
Kathleen Wolin suggested taking canned beans and rinsing them, which will lower the salt content by 40%. She also suggested you not eat at restaurants any more than twice a week. She also suggested diluting broth with a little bit of water to lower the sodium content, as well as avoiding packaged and processed food like luncheon meat, which are very high in sodium.
If you want to switch out salt for other ways to flavor your food, you can try garlic salt, nutmeg, cumin, and paprika. They’re not the same as salt, but they’re great ways to flavor your food.
Dr Oz: Lower Your Colon Cancer Risk
Dr. Oz then moved on to talk about colon cancer, which is a huge part of the intestine, and said it’s a huge problem because 64,000 women are diagnosed every year and 25,000 of those women die.
Kathleen then asked everyone in the audience to raise their hands if they eat dairy most days of the week. She then asked how many thought they were getting enough vitamin D and calcium. She said for those that didn’t answer yes to those two questions, they’re at an increased risk for colon cancer. You can slash your risk of getting colon cancer by getting more vitamin D.
Dr Oz: Vitamin D Sources
Dr. Oz then shared some ways to get more vitamin D into your diet. The best way to get enough vitamin D is to spend 10 minutes every day in the sun. You can also get vitamin D from foods like milk, cereals fortified with vitamin D, salmon, leafy green vegetables, or even a vitamin D supplement. Make sure the supplement gives you 1,000 international units a day and make sure it’s a vitamin D-3 supplement if you can.
Dr Oz: Lower Your Pancreatic Cancer Risk
Dr. Oz said a lot of people are appropriately scared of Pancreatic Cancer, calling it the silent killer. He said it takes the lives of about 20,000 every year, most of which pass away.
Kathleen said you should ask yourself if you have high blood sugar or if you’re overweight. If you have either of those, you’re at an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Kathleen explained that the pancreas creates insulin and insulin is important for regulating our blood sugar. People who are overweight tend to have abnormal blood sugar levels. She said managing those two things is really important to lowering your risk for developing pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Oz said following a low glycemic diet will help lower your risk as well as help you lose weight. Dr. Oz suggested eating broccoli combined with hummus. He also recommended sesame seeds, peanuts, shrimp, and sweet potatoes. Dr. Oz said it should be easy to remember sweet potatoes because they look like a pancreas. He said that how you make the sweet potato though, makes a difference. You could bake it, steam it, or roast it. He suggested that you don’t boil it or “zap out all the ingredients.”
Dr. Oz said these are all simple things you can do to lower your risk.
