Rachael Ray: Jake Smollett New Orleans Gumbo Pasta Recipe Ingredients

Jake Smollett joined Rachael Ray to share his recipe for New Orleans Gumbo Pasta, which is just bursting with flavor. (29183526@N06 / Flickr)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1/3 C finely chopped onion
- 1/3 C red bell pepper – finely chopped
- 1/4 C chopped celery – minced
- 1 2/3 C chicken stock
- 1 tsp basil flakes
- 1/2 tsp granulated onion
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 C Parmesan cheese – to top
- 1 lb penne pasta
- 10 cloves garlic – minced
- 1/3 C green bell pepper – finely chopped
- 1/3 C yellow bell pepper – finely chopped
- 2 hot Italian turkey sausages – removed from casing
- 1 tsp pure ground gumbo file
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 tsp granulated garlic
- 1/2 lb shrimp – peeled, deveined, cut in half
- handful chopped parsley – to top
Jake Smollett: Rachael Ray New Orleans Gumbo Pasta Recipe Directions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil for the penne
- Let the pasta cook for about 7-8 minutes, then drain and set aside
- In the same pot used to cook the pasta, heat olive oil over high heat and add the vegetables and garlic
- Saute for about 8-10 minutes, until soft
- Add the turkey sausage and brown
- Once the sausage is cooked, pour in the chicken stock, then add the gumbo file, cayenne pepper, basil flakes, granulated garlic and onion, and salt
- Let the mixture simmer and thicken for approximately 7-8 minutes, then add the shrimp
- When the shrimp is cooked through, add the cooked pasta and toss
- Serve with freshly chopped parsley and grated Parmesan cheese
