The Drs: The Best Over-The-Counter Acne Products & Acne Scar Removal

The Doctors: Clearing Up Acne And Acne Scars

The Doctors had dermatologist Dr. Will Kirby on the show, who was there to answer Andrea’s question about acne and acne scars. She said she wants to clear up everything on her face and she didn’t know how. Dr. Kirby said that his job is to get people’s face so clear that they have nothing to pick at.

The Doctors discussed the best over-the-counter acne medications and successful ways to get rid of acne and acne scars. Plus, the importance of the 57 day skin cycle. (CandyBox Images / Shutterstock.com)

Dr. Kirby said he thought Andrea’s acne could be treated within 57 days. That’s the average length of the adult skin cycle. Dr. Kirby said that prescription topical medications are more effective than over-the-counter things. He said the key is the 57 day cycle. Most people don’t want to stick on that cycle. They just want a quick treatment.

The Doctors: Getting Rid Of Pockmarks And Uneven Pores

Dr. Rachael wondered if there was anyway to get rid of pockmarks and uneven pores. Dr. Kirby said that’s really two questions. Pockmocks are texture changes and they’re indicative of deeper, more serious acne. Those almost always need medication.

Pore size is always going to be a problem. Your skin is constantly trying to fill pores. Even if one day you wake up and your pores look great, that’s not going to last very long.

The Doctors: What Are The Best Over-The-Counter Acne Products?

He said if you want to use over-the-counter products, you should find one with at least 40 percent salicylic acid, as long as you don’t use too much. Salicylic acid can be very irritating to the skin. That will clear the pores and help with pore congestion. There’s also benzoyl peroxide. It’s also a little irritating, but it’s another great acne product.

Dr. Kirby said that the most important thing about any acne routine is getting on the actual routine. People want instant gratification when it comes to their skin and that’s not how skin works. You’re stuck with your skin cycle of 57 days or two months to start seeing a difference and another month after that to see a nice clinical change. Make sure to stick to your routine for at least three months and you should see results.
