Jay Leno’s segment of funny 911 calls included security camera footage of bad drivers, burglars and a man who called 911 for Chia Pet customer service.
Dealing with the public in any capacity is a thankless task, but especially when you are required to be level-headed and mature, as emergency personnel must be. Here are some of the misadventures that caught the eye of the Tonight Show team.
The Tonight Show: Eaton County 911 Tape
An Eaton County 911 tape featured a recording of a young child dialing the 911 operator to see how things were going with the police. The kid wanted to know whether they had apprehended any bad guys and if they had a cell to put them in.
The child got wise and hung up when the operator asked to speak with a parent.
Tonight Show: Robbery Caught On Camera
Security footage showed two criminals trying to steal DVD players in a smash and grab robbery. But they got a little excited when grabbing the electronics and knocked the shelf over on themselves. At least one of them was hit in the head with a falling television before they scampered away empty handed.
Jay Leno: Chia Pet Customer Service
Another man called 911 to report that his Chia Pet died. The operator was understandably confused at first, but the man insisted this was the number the box said to call. Then he asked the operator for the correct number for Chia Pet customer service.
The company that makes Chia Pets is Joseph Enterprises, and their website does not list a phone number, but you can email CustomerService@JEIUSA.com to get in touch. There is no need to call 911 about your Chia Pet. And how would you even know it was dead?
The Tonight Show: Driver Security Footage
In another security tape, a woman ran over the curb while trying to exit a parking structure because she forgot to straighten her wheel. The next driver did not wait for the arm to open. Then it broke and was stuck in place. Finally, her solution was to get out of her car and bend the arm, breaking it even more, so she could drive away.
The last driver was behind the wheel of a bus, which also broke off a gate arm that hit a man in the head. That has got to hurt, especially if you put it on repeat like Jay did.
Tonight Show: Justin Bieber Intruder?
A Seattle girl put a life size Justin Bieber cutout in her living room to surprise her father. But he was so surprised that he called 911 to report an intruder. He gave a fairly accurate description of Justin Bieber’s height and physical appearance, even noting that he had not moved an inch since he was spotted. I wonder how that turned out, how embarrassed that father is now, and how much trouble his daughter got into as a result of her prank.
