Today Show: Panera Bread Gets Rid Of Food Additives
Panera Bread has announced it is getting rid of food additives in its 1800 locations. The announcement comes amid slumping sales, Today Show said. Is this a move for health or a move to compete with its rivals in the food industry? Probably both. Panera Bread’s announcement comes as part of a growing trend in restaurants to lure customers with healthier food.

Starbucks announced in 2009 it was going to get rid of artificial sweeteners, dyes, and flavors from its products. Chipotle said it would get rid of all GMO ingredients. And Subway took out a controversial ingredient in its bread that was also found prominently in yoga mats. Experts say these restaurants are changing their ingredients because the consumer is looking for organic food.
Panera Bread’s changes will be in effect by 2016 and despite the push for healthy ingredients, Panera will still sell fountain sodas, which of course contain high fructose corn soup.
Today: Bobby Flay Weighs In On Panera
Famed chef Bobby Flay came by Today Show to weigh in on Panera Bread. He said that someone at Panera was paying attention to what trendy independent restaurants were doing. “People want to eat better. They want to think that they’re eating food that’s better for them and good for them,” Bobby Flay said.
He said that he thought this was part of a “food revolution” in this country. He also said that even though everyone is pushing for healthier food, the real question is whether people will be able to eat healthy given the options.
Today Show: Reporter Becomes Queen of Spain
Recently, the king of Spain, Juan Carlos, made an announcement that he will abdicate in favor of his son. This is putting a huge spotlight on his daughter-in-law, Princess Letizia, who will be the first commoner in Spanish history to become queen.
She was an award-winning journalist when she met her prince on assignment. The couple married in 2004 and she has been a fashion icon in Spain ever since. Princess Letizia was married previously, so she will also be the first divorced queen of Spain. She also supposedly had plastic surgery, creating some controversy in Spain.
But overall, the Spanish love Princess Letizia and her husband. Princess Letizia and Princess Kate of England are often compared to each other, an inevitable comparison. The two have a similar taste in fashion, with a common touch, often wearing chain store fashions.
Today: Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The U.S.A. Turns 30
It’s the 30 year anniversary of Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The U.S.A. The album has sold 30 million copies world wide and had seven top 10 U.S. singles.
Carson Daly asked the anchors for their favorite album. Matt Lauer said Hotel California by The Eagles, Savannah said Led Zeppelin IV, Al Roker said Songs In the Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder, Natalie said Joshua Tree by U2, and Carson said Michael Jackson’s Thriller. “You could take those five albums right there and have a lot of fun,” Matt Lauer said.
