Today Show: Mikaela Shiffrin Wins World Cup
This week has also been a big week for Mikaela Shiffrin who turned 18 and won the Alpine Ski World Cup. She also recently became the first woman in 39 years to win the slalom event, two wins that helped solidify her place in the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
She told the Today Show she was excited about her wins and she is excited to go to the Olympics this year. Shiffrin has a few more races and an entire summer before Sochi, but the skier said she already visited Sochi to check out the hill she will be skiing on, where she will be staying and what Russia is like.
“It is a different world,” said Shiffrin of her visit to Russia. “Russia is a unique place.”
A lot of people have been comparing Shiffrin to Missy Franklin, the American-Canadian swimmer who won four gold medals and bronze at the Summer Olympics. Shiffrin said the comparison doesn’t put any more pressure on her but she did say it is an honor to be compared to such a great athlete.
