Shots were shown of fans lined up to see John Green at different events promoting The Fault in Our Stars. They look like scenes you would see at a rock concert, but that’s just how excited people get about John Green.

In addition to writing books, John Green and his brother, Hank Green, have a YouTube channel, Vlogbrothers, that has 200 million viewers. In fact, so many people are paying attention to John Green that Time Magazine just named him one of their 100 Most Influential. John Green’s followers endearingly call themselves Nerdfighters.

Today Show: The Making of The Fault in Our Stars

John Green’s book The Fault in Our Stars follows the story of Hazel Grace, who’s battling cancer, and falls in love with another cancer patient, Augustus Waters.

How did John Green come up with the idea for his book? He was working as a Student Chaplain at a children’s hospital when he was 21, spending time with parents who’s kids were dying of cancer. He said it was very hard for him to stay hopeful during that time. A few years later, he met Esther Earl, a young woman who was battling cancer, and has since passed away. It was after meeting Esther Earl that John Green realized that it’s possible to live “a short life and a good life.”

For the film version of The Fault in Our Stars, Shailene Woodley stars as Hazel Grace, and John Green loved working with her. He said, “At no point did I have a poker face,” and every time big decisions were being made, all he could think about was the fact that Shailene Woodley was starring in the movie.

You can catch The Fault in Our Stars in theaters June 6 2014.
