Actress Laura Dern came by Today Showto talk about her new movie The Fault In Our Stars, where she plays the mother of Shailene Woodley‘s character. Laura Dern said it was the most grown-up role she’d ever had. It was the first time she’d gotten to play a real mother.

Savannah Guthrie described the movie as the “feel-good, feel-bad movie of the summer.” Laura Dern said that tone is all due to John Green. “I think everyone who’s read it wants the film to pay tribute to his words and we were all fiercely protective, as every fan is of his, and he navigates that so beautifully in the book,” she said. Laura Dern added that everyone she knows has read it and this film is for families, dates, and friends.

Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley have great mother-daughter chemistry in the film and Laura Dern said that’s because the whole cast loves each other. “I thought it worked particularly well because John so beautifully captured a mother-daughter relationship that’s a very modern, progressive relationship. They’re friends and they have mutual respect and admiration for each other. And it was really cool to get to play that kind of relationship,” she said.

Shailene Woodley is famous for being “voluntarily homeless” and Laura Dern’s home is one of her crash pads. Laura Dern said she’s there as much as she wants to be and her children love her.

Laura Dern’s children are nine and 12 and Savannah asked if she thought the parenting in the movie felt natural to her. Laura said that one of the key parts of the book is the unique voice of the girl who has been given room to develop her identity. So for her, trying to honor that was a very important part of her acting process.

Savannah Guthrie apologized for the last time Laura Dern was on the show, when she had to stand outside behind the barrier with fans of the Today Show. This time around, Laura Dern was invited inside. Savannah Guthrie thanked her for coming back after that experience.
