Today Show: Star Trek Into Darkness Review
Star Trek Into Darkness, the second installment of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, will be out soon. Chris Pine, who plays the iconic Captain Kirk, came on the show to talk a little about the movie and where the cast’s confidence levels are at.
Now that Chris Pine has conquered the initial apprehension of playing Captain
Kirk, he has to clear another hurdle – living up to the first film which was met with very warm reception both from fans and critics alike.
Chris Pine: Captain Kirk & Spock’s Bromance
Everyone loves a bromance, and Chris Pine feels that the one that takes place between him and Zachary Quinto’s character, Spock, is one of the things that makes the movies so interesting to watch.
“Kirk is ruled by his passions and ruled by his heart, and Spock, obviously, is a man of logic and reason,” Pine said.
With two personalities coming from polar opposites of the emotional spectrum coming together, the sparks that result can create quite an air of dramatic tension.
Chris, when asked which one he takes on more in his real life, said he strikes a balance between both. Rather than just use this answer as a cop-out, he actually tied it back into the movie.
“I think that’s what the journey is for these two men – to figure out some kind of balance between the body and the mind.”
Set Of Star Trek Into Darkness
J.J. Abrams is good at what he does, but not good enough to arrange the building of an actual spaceship for the cast to perform on. However, Chris Pine still believes that it acts as a wonderful playground for the cast to act out their roles on.
Drawing from a past experience he had during a brief stint on the television drama, ER, which Chris said felt like a real hospital, he felt that this set gave him the same feeling, except this time it was a spaceship instead. With such an accurate representation of the S.S. Enterprise to act on, Chris thought this really helped them act out their roles that much better.
Chris Pine: Jack Ryan Role
Chris Pine has been acting for a while, but he still feels very fortunate to be on the set of Star Trek Into Darkness. Chris doesn’t see this as the pinnacle of his career, though, and is always looking upwards to see what he can accomplish next.
Coming from a family of actors, Chris Pine has always kind of been predisposed to shooting for the stars. His next role as Jack Ryan is just another challenge for him to overcome.
Star Trek Into Darkness has a release date of May 17, 2013.
