Today Show: Voice Contestant Surprises Father
Because Father’s Day is coming up, The Today Show had a special spotlight on DeMille and Charles. DeMille is auditioning for The Voice, and he came on Today with his grandfather, Charles. Charles has acted as both a grandfather and a father to DeMille and so DeMille wanted to honor him on the show.
They rolled a special video where DeMille said that Charles has been right beside him his entire life, supporting him in his singing career and in his life. “My dreams are starting to come true and it would have never been possible without my grandfather,” DeMille said. After raising his own children, Charles began to raise DeMille. He worked at least two jobs at any one time to support DeMille, in addition to serving his country.
DeMille said it was critical to him to honor Charles, because he was the man who showed him how to be a man. Charles said he was really surprised by the message. DeMille had been telling him to come to New York to support him for a month and so he came, but he had no idea what was in store for him.
Today Show: DeMille And Charles Performance
DeMille wanted to surprise Charles further with the chance to perform. There was a crowd gathered outside the Today studio for a Train concert later in the show and Matt Lauer invited Charles with the chance to perform. Charles has always wanted to perform a song in front of a crowd of people.
So DeMille and Charles performed the National Anthem together, right there on the Today Show stage. It was a great moment. You could see how much the chance meant to Charles.
Today: Another Surprise For Charles
But the Today Show had one more surprise for Charles, because the Philly Phanatic came out and Matt Lauer told Charles that he was going to go to Philadelphia to sing the national anthem in front of a full stadium. “I can do that,” Charles said, laughing.
