Today Show: Spring Cleaning Advice
Spring cleaning can be a daunting, dirty and exhausting task that needs to be completed but Jill Martin, author of The Weekend Makeover, said it is possible to get your spring cleaning done in one weekend and make some money while you are at it. She said every house is filled with lots of items you don’t use that you could be making money from. From clothes to bed sheets to exercise machines, everything you don’t use can be sold for some cash or donated for a tax break.
Some of the items Martin thinks are the best to get rid of and spend time going through to see if they are sellable or able to be donated include:
- Old seasonal ornaments and decorations
- Clutter in the garage from toys to tools
Martin said the most difficult thing for people to do is get rid of things. She said making the first step Saturday morning towards cleaning out the house will help you make time on Monday to donate and sell all the items you are getting rid of. She used a treadmill as an example. A lot of people have treadmills in their home but they don’t use them often. She put one up on Craigslist and got $50 for it. She said it was a deal because the person came and got it right out of the house. She didn’t even have to help move it.
Today Show: IDoNowIDont.com Wedding Dress Sales
Martin said there is no reason to hold on to your wedding dress. If you are happily married or divorced, either way the dress is just sitting around. She said she sold a wedding dress from a woman’s house for around $500 on the site IDoNowIDont.com. Even after they took their 10 percent cut, she said the woman still made some money on something sitting in her basement.
Today Show: De-Clutter the Garage
The garage is the best place to find some items to sell. According to Martin, the best items to sell are the toys and tools you no longer use. She said she likes to use the new eBay app that allows you to take a picture on your smartphone and sell the product right away.
Today Show: Gold Jewelry Prices On the Rise
Martin said old gold jewelry can fetch a lot of money. With the price of gold going up, selling even the smallest pieces of jewelry can bring in some serious money. The best part is you don’t have to untangle the jewelry either.
Today Show: Poshmark Review
When selling your vintage clothing, Martin said Poshmark is the best website to start at. All you need to do is take a picture of the clothes you are selling, people buy the clothes, you get a shipping label in the mail and you send the clothes to whoever bought them. Martin said she helped one woman sell a bunch of non-deisgner clothing for almost $300.
Today Show: Donate Items You Can’t Sell
Martin said when you finally get down to the items you can’t sell, donate them. As long as you get a receipt for the items you are donating you can write off donations on your taxes.
