Today Show: Martha Stewart Making Textbooks Look Nice
Martha Stewart came by the Today Show to talk about some sensible Do-It-Yourself ideas for back to school. So before you go on a shopping spree with all the Labor Day deals out there, here’s some great ideas for your old school stuff first.
First up: how do you make textbooks look nice? This isn’t always a concern for students, but some kids may want to cover their ugly U.S. History textbook cover with some nice paper. Martha recommended buying some store bought paper from an arts store or maps or comics. You just fold the book into the paper and tape it down.
Today Show: Martha Stewart Binders
Martha Stewart said that it’s also helpful for your students to have binders. To spruce them up, take some of that same store bought paper (or comics or maps or whatever) and glue it to a thin piece of cardboard. Slide it into the front of the binder underneath the plastic sleeve. Then, print out a title card with the name of the subject that binder is for and slide it on top. This provides a great-looking and practical cover for your child’s binder.
Today Show: Martha Stewart Decorative Tape & Paper Folders
Do you have trouble getting your child’s paper folders to stay together and not immediately fall apart? I had this problem my entire school life. Folders have a shelf life of approximately two weeks before a small tear starts to become a big tear.
Martha Stewart’s suggestion is genius. Use some decorative duct tape to tape along the edges to create a fun pattern. This saves the edges and preserves the life of the folders.
Today Show: Martha Stewart Backpacks
Martha Stewart also recommended sprucing up an old backpack if it’s still fine to use. Jazz it up with some iron-on fabric. Cut it into a heart shape. Tamron Hall attempted to help Martha out by cutting out a heart, but she failed miserably. She said she thought the heart she cut out would be something her mom loved, but not up to Martha Stewart’s standards. It must be pretty nerve-wracking to do crafts with Martha Stewart standing right there.
In any case, Tamron’s heart broke in half during the cutting process some how. “Martha, you broke my heart,” she joked.
Martha Stewart said that you can also use iron-on fabric to cover up any holes.
Today Show: Martha Stewart Pen Storage Bins
A lot of schools are asking students bring a storage bin for their pencils and pens. Martha Stewart said you can use stickers or glue on little gems.
Today Show: Martha Stewart Sneakers
Martha Stewart said that sneakers with the cool colors and latest styles can be expensive. So you can do your own at home. Buy a basic white sneaker and some fabric paint. Tape the rubber on the rim of the bottom of the shoe, then wet the brush and dip it into the pant. Paint with a strong hand in the front of the shoe, getting lighter and lighter as you move to the back. This gives a cool fade from your solid color into the white in the back, which gives it a really cool effect.
At the end of this segment, Tamron Hall asked if Martha Stewart was ready to get some Ariana Grande in. Martha looked confused and said, “Uh…you bet.” I don’t think she’s a fan.
