Today Show: Gift Giver Labels
What kind of gift giver are you? USA Today has come up with a list of gift givers and seems to have left no stone unturned. The Today Show co-hosts Kathie Lee and Hoda ran down the list for the audience and viewers at home:
You are the slacker gift giver, you like the pressure of last minute shopping and the feeling of waiting until the last minute. I think a lot of college students can relate to this one!
You shop for the holidays all year long, probably starting with January sales. Your closet is reserved for gifts and everything is labeled just so. To-do lists are put into motion during the spring and hours are spent researching the perfect gift. Shopping is completed by Thanksgiving (at the latest).
The Practical Gift Giver:
Skipping the gift altogether, you go for the cash or gift card. There’s no need to waste all of that extra time reading people’s minds when they can simply go out and buy their own gift. The holiday spirit is probably not running through your veins, but you still want to give something to friends and loved ones – just without the time and hassle associated the typical shopping experience.
You give things are that needed but not necessarily wanted. For instance, Kathie Lee wants workout socks and a new treadmill – her current one is from the Flintstones era, she said.
The Social Giver:
As a selfish gift giver, you give people things you personally aspire to own.
Today Show: Gift Etiquette
What happens if you receive a gift you don’t like? Experts say you should ask the person for a gift receipt. Hoda’s solution: just say thank you and give it to someone else. Personally, I think the latter option is better and avoids hurt feelings. What do you think? Leave your best strategy for Returning Gifts in the comments section.
The co-hosts continued to bounce around other gift Advice topics. Hoda worries about those moments when you give a $20 pair of gloves, only to receive a nice electronic in return. The exchange feels inequitable. The two co-hosts, Kathie Lee and Hoda, are not giving gifts to each other and as they put it, “we’re each other’s gifts year round!”
Today Show: Donner or Donder?
The Today Show went out on the streets of New York City to see how many people actually knew the name of Donder, or Donner?. One old man looked up “doner” on his Ipad – clearly the wrong choice! Most everyone was confused and went with what sounded better, with no real clue as to the correct spelling. As it turns out, the reindeer were originally written in German, and Thunder and Lightening were Donder and Blitzen. The translation confused people and technically either spelling is correct, although “Donder” probably makes you seem more knowledgeable.
Today Show: Meeting New People
Did you know? 1 in 5 people would rather go on Facebook than enjoy Meeting New People face to face. A good tip: just go and say hello – all you need is 10 seconds of insane courage! Stick to common ground. Hoda’s examples were to bring up the good food or a local sports team.
If you have a sense of humor, have fun with the verbal exchange. Experts want you to say: “if you were a famous actor, who would you be?” I think that’s a little cheesy and the co-hosts agreed, both claiming the opening line to be absolutely ridiculous. Better luck next time, experts?
