Today Show: “The Fault in Our Stars” & John Green
Kathie Lee and Hoda sat down with Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, the two stars of the new movie The Fault in Our Stars as well as the author of the best-selling book the movie is based on, John Green.
The story is about two cancer-stricken teens who met in a support group. But as Kathie Lee and Hoda pointed out, the story isn’t about illness, but is instead a celebration of life and first love.
John Green said it’s a dream come true, bot only to have a movie made of your book, but a movie that he’s so proud of. He said that’s a rare thing. He said the movie perfectly captures the tone of the story, and because of that he feels like he won the lottery.

Actress Shailene Woodley said it’s not about cancer, it’s about two people falling in love. She said the story shows that teenagers can feel real love and it’s just as important as when you’re 20, 40, or 80, and that’s what’s so beautiful about it.
John Green said he got his dream cast, but Shailene Woodley still had to fight for the role. She said “it wasn’t really fighting, I just really wanted the opportunity to audition.”
She said Josh, their director, “rightfully so, wanted to cast a 16-year-old or somebody younger” to portray the charcter more authentically and they originally thought she was too old for the part.
Today Show: Ansel Elgort Kids Living with Illness
When talking about working with Shailene, Ansel Elgort said they got closer and were able to trust each other. They bicker at times and laugh at each other, and overall they have great chemistry.
So why have so many people watched the trailer? Shailene said it has to do with anticipation, while John Green had a more complex response.
He said he thinks it’s because it’s about kids who are living with illness yet have full, rich emotional lives. They’re funny people, people who have desires and hopes and missions and he thinks that’s what people are responding to.

As for avoiding negative attention in the media, Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort acted as if they don’t do anything special.
Shailene said that she and Ansel both do they best they can for themselves without comparing it to anyone. She said that everyone has their own journey and their own path.
Shailene even shared that she gave her house to her gram because she wasn’t home all last year and didn’t need it because of all the traveling she was doing.
The Fault in Our Stars hits theaters June 6 2014.
