After the devastating loss of his teenage son, professional surfer Shaun Tomson set out to clear his mind by writing a book, which he called The Code. Shaun Tomson decided to use his son’s death as inspiration to make something positive with his book, The Code.
The first chapter in The Code is “I Will Be Myself.” When he was 19 just starting his professional career, Shaun Tomson was offered heroin, and the decision he had to make to turn it down was one that he made for himself. Today, Shaun thinks that kids are faced with these dangerous decisions every single moment. Sticking to the statement “I Will Be Myself” is what helped him make the decision to say no without pause.

When they lost their son, Shaun Thomson and his wife were devastated initially. However, every line in The Code is dedicated to his late son, something that helped him remain optimistic, even when he was going through depressing and trying times. Now, Shaun has a new son, who is currently four years old, according to his Kathie Lee & Hoda interview.
The last words Shaun heard from his son “There is a light ahead,” something that Shaun had written for a high school paper that day. Shaun and his son were talking about the paper on the phone when they last spoke. Since then, Shaun has been living by those words day in and day out.
