Kathie Lee & Hoda: Fashion Icon Betsey Johnson
There’s nobody quite like Betsey Johnson. The still spry 70-year old style maven has been in the fashion business for 40 years, bringing her particular brand of whimsy and playfulness to the often serious industry. She and her daughter, LuLu, stopped by the Today Show to discuss their new reality show on the Style Network. All four women raised a glass, toasting the start of the new show. “It’s five o’clock somewhere,” Betsey quipped. Betsey was dressed in a sparkly jacket and silver shoes, while LuLu wore a more traditional purple frock and nude heels.

Lulu said they were “ready for change, ready for something new and kinda willing to jump into.” They were both unsure of what was going to happen in their lives with so much change happening. With the reality show, it was something to immerse themselves in and focus on. “We were like ‘help!’ And the reality show had something going on,” Betsey explained.

LuLu and Betsey, although related, have cultivated their own looks. Betsey, of course, is famous for her outrageous, daring outfits, hairstyles, and makeup, while he daughter is a bit more conservative. LuLu even removed a tattoo because she felt it was not authentic.
“I need to be my own person,” she said. “I need to figure it out for myself. I need to do my own thing.” Despite their differences, Betsey looked to LuLu for help in finding a relationship.
Betsey, however, sticks to her uniqueness by preferring much, much younger men. The grandma told Kathie Lee and Hoda that she prefers “22 to 27, 28.” Kathie Lee playfully reminded Betsey to stay away from her son. The interview ended with Betesy, ever flexible and athletic, doing a cartwheel in the studio.
