The View: Jazz 11-Year-Old Transgender Girl
Jazz is an 11-year-old girl who was born in a male body.
In a special 20/20, Barbara Walters caught up with Jazz, an 11-year-old girl who was born a boy. Being transgender and going through puberty means Jazz is entering a new stage in her life.
The View: Jazz’s Transgender Story
Jazz knew from the time she could think that she was a girl. She wanted to play with girl toys and told her parents that she was a girl. Growing up, she was teased by kids but received love and support from her family. She is one of the earliest transition cases in history.
She does many of the things that normal girls do. She plays on the girl’s soccer team, goes to the women’s restroom and lives life as a girl. The only thing that holds her back is her male body parts, which she calls “The P Word.” Jazz even makes her own mermaid swimming costumes. Her mother explained that many transkids have a love of mermaids because mermaids have ambiguous genitalia.
Jazz is on hormone blockers to stop her from going through male puberty. When she turns 18 she will get to decide if she wants gender reassignment surgery so that she can live fully as a woman. She may also start taking estrogen so that she can transition more into a woman. The hormone blockers she is on are irreversible and could leave her infertile.
The View: Talking About Transgender
The hosts had many questions that Barbara asked Jazz in the interview, which airs on January 19 2013 at 9 p.m. on ABC. They asked if Jazz was going through a phase, which is what people asked her parents when she first started to transition. Jazz is a confident young woman and wants the world to know what it means to be transgender.
As a transgender girl, Jazz is dealing with talking to boys about who she is. She and her parents decided she would be upfront about being transgender. She shows people this video when they don’t understand.
