When Lionel was younger, he wanted to be an Episcopal Priest. This only lasted three weeks. He knew many clergymen growing up and he went to Tuskegee University with all the intentions of working in the church. Then, he joined The Commodores, his first hit group. The rest is history after a young girl in the front row yelled, “Sing it, baby!”
After he began his performing career, Richie realized that his music was his ministry. He’s had people get married to his song, get engaged to his songs, and then, there are those weirdos that say they made love to Lionel Richie, many times.
When he’s getting romantic, Lionel Richie said he doesn’t like to listen to music. But he likes Marvin Gaye and Isaac Haye if he really wants to “get his groove on.”
Lionel Richie’s Grandkids Don’t Know He’s Famous
Despite being incredibly famous around the world, his kids, Nicole, Miles, and Sophie, completely ignore their father’s fame. Nicole Richie was adopted at age four, shortly followed by the births of Miles and Sophie in the 1990s. Nicole’s kids, Harlow and Sparrow, don’t know that their “pop-pop” is a famous singer. When their father Joel Madden was performing and invited Lionel Richie on stage, the kids were very confused.
Lionel Richie: All The Hits All Night Long North American Tour
Lionel Richie recently got back from Europe and he’s heading to China soon. He said it’s very strange to go to a country that doesn’t speak English and hear the crowds sing his music. It really goes to show that music is an international language.
This fall, Richie will get to perform his hits in America for the first time in nine years. He said that when rap music got big, he went to Russia, China, and other formerly closed countries to spread his music. He played for 500,000 in Budapest.
You should expect as many songs as Lionel Richie can remember on the tour. He said that a show will be about 2 1/2 hours long. He warns that he might forget a favorite song, but he apologizes before hand.
Lionel Richie Performs “Hello” & Inspiration Behind “Stuck On You”
Inspiration for Lionel Richie comes in the moment. He said that he grew up in Tuskegee, Alabama, and he would go to a truck stop down the road for inspiration. A trucker once used the phrase “stuck on” a woman he liked and it became Richie’s song “Stuck on You.”
“Hello” came from his college years where he would say “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?” to the beautiful women passing by. The answer back then was “No,” but today it would be “Yes, yes yes!”
Richie performed “Hello” and heart were swooning all over the place. Could this man be any smoother? The answer is of course no. It’s upsetting that rap music kept him away so long, but now he’s back and better than ever!
