Actress Emily Mortimer came by The Talk to discuss her new show Doll & Em. But first, Sharon Osborne asked her about her dad John Mortimer, who was a very respected writer in the U.K. Did he ever help her with her essays in school? Emily Mortimer said that she made him write all of her creative stories in English and there was an entire term in school when he wrote every one. The report came back at the end of the semester and the teacher said the stories were good, but lacked the spark of imagination. She said he was so mad he wanted to call up the school but she had to stop him.

Emily Mortimer talked about a time when Dennis Miller was interviewing her and introduced her as Emily Watson. Emily Mortimer said that the weirdest part was that she was too embarrassed to correct him, so she went through the entire interview as Emily Watson. At the end, one of the staff told him he’d have to introduce her again because he got her name wrong.
“And that’s why he doesn’t have a show anymore,” Julie Chen joked.

Emily Mortimer’s husband Alessandro Nivola is also an actor and they both have to shoot love scenes with other people. Emily Mortimer said that she gets way more jealous than he does. She said she hates when he does it and she goes completely livid. She said he’s learned to lie now.
Emily Mortimer said that she often asks Alessandro about bizarre scenarios, such as what if she’s home with the kids for three months as Alessandro Nivola is filming a movie with a beautiful actress and Emily is being mean to him over the phone. Emily wondered not if he would cheat, but if he would be at all conflicted.

Emily Mortimer’s new show Doll & Em is a sitcom based on her relationship to her best friend Dolly Wells. Emily Mortimer said it started when she and Dolly talked for house on the phone on an international call every day for 10 years.
She had to justify the phone bills, so Dolly and Emily pretended they were writing a script. But eventually people kept asking them what they were writing, so they had to come up with something. So the idea behind the show is what happens if you hire your best friend as your personal assistant and the answer is that everything goes wrong.
