The Doctors know that barbecue season is coming, which is why they welcomed food blogger Danielle Walker to the show to share her diet-friendly barbecue recipes. Danielle shared some summertime swaps, starting with barbecue sauce. She explained that store-bought sauces typically contain high fructose corn syrup as well as caramel coloring and table sugar. She explained that you can make your own sauce with 25% less sugar. You can find the recipe for the barbecue sauce below.
You can add this sauce to chicken to make a delicious barbecue chicken, or use it as a dipping sauce for thinks like chicken nuggets or shredded pork. You can’t go wrong with good barbecue sauce and this recipe is finger licking good!

The Drs: Healthy Homemade Barbecue Sauce Recipe Ingredients
- 3/4 C honey
- 1/4 C tomato paste
- 2 tbsp coconut aminos
- 1 1/2 tsp natural liquid smoke
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper
- 2 C tomato puree
- 1/2 C white vinegar
- 2 tbsp coconut crystals
- 2 tsp fish sauce
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 tsp minced garlic
- 1/2 tsp ground all spice
The Drs: Healthy Homemade Barbecue Sauce Recipe Directions
- Add all ingredient to a saucepan over medium-high heat & stir to combine
- Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce heat & simmer for 30-40 minutes until sauce has reduced by half
- Let the sauce come to room temperature before storing in the refrigerator
- The sauce will last up to one week
