The Drs: Treatment For Painful Itchy Scars + What Are Keloids?

The Drs: Large Painful Scars

The Drs: Treatment For Painful Itchy Scars + What Are Keloids?

The Doctors surprised a woman suffering from painful, itchy keloids with a life-changing treatment. (sundazed / flickr)

The Doctors received an email from a woman who was pleading for help. Dr Jorge Rodriguez calls himself “Dr Disgusting” and he saw Tiffany, who had four large keloids on her shoulders and chest. Dr Rodriguez said they were the largest keloids he had ever seen. Tiffany explained that they started when she was 15 years old, but grew to the point that they would push through her clothes.

The Drs: What Is A Keloid?

Tiffany said she did her best to cover them but they lowered her self-esteem and kept her from feeling normal. She said the worst part is hearing “what’s that?” Dr Rodriguez explained that a keloid is a type of growth of an abnormal tissue called collagen. When you have an injury, your body starts making collagen, but it should eventually stop.

In Tiffany’s case, the collagen just keeps growing more and more, resulting in the raised growths. Tiffany had all of them removed, but they came right back. Dr Rodriquez sent her to see Dr Sonia Batra in hopes of helping Tiffany achieve a normal life.

The Drs: Treatment For Keloids

Tiffany explained to Dr Batra that when her keloids were injected, some areas went down, while others raised even more. The spots can be painful and itchy, and sometimes even burn and release discharge. Dr Batra was going to use liquid nitrogen to freeze the keloid from the inside out, causing frostbite in the cells that produce the scar tissue. She explained that the spot would look black for about a month before it falls off, leaving a flat, thinner scar.

Dr Batra explained that the spots were taking a while to freeze because she still had circulation in the areas, which was keeping them a little warmer. An hour after the treatment was started, you could see that the area was frozen.

Tiffany then joined the show from Atlanta, Georgia via Polycom. Tiffany said she felt very hopeful and Dr Travis Stork explained that Dr Batra recommended several rounds of the treatment. They reached out to a plastic surgeon in Georgia, Dr Miles Graivier, who shared that he’s treated a lot of people with similar problems. He had a plan in mind to give Tiffany some anesthesia, before aggressively treating all of the spots at the same time. Also, CryoShape agreed to give them what they needed for the procedure, and Dr Graivier would do it all free of charge.

Tiffany was so thankful she was brought to tears, but had a huge glowing smile on her face.
