The Doctors: Struggling With Weight

Crystal and her daughters, Candra and Clarissa, have been struggling with their weight for a long time, and they told their story on The Doctors. Crystal has been struggling with her weight since she was 19 and her daughters have a number of health problems as well. One of them has gained 85 pounds over the last five years. She has high blood pressure, depression, knee problems, and back pain. Her other daughter said that she was diagnosed with asthma as a child and it changed her weight forever because she was a lot less active.

Crystal said she heard great things about Dr. Michael Feiz, a bariatric surgeon, so she and her daughters met with him. The three women decided to do a gastric sleeve surgery together as a family all on the same day.

The Doctors: Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Dr. Feiz performed a gastric sleeve surgery on each of the women. In each woman, he cut out 80 to 90 percent of the woman’s stomach and staples the remaining portion of the stomach to form a tube. This combats obesity in two ways. One is that the size of the stomach is made smaller through the surgery (by removing 80 to 90 percent of it), which means you feel full with much less food. The second way is that the amounts of the hormone that makes you feel hungry also goes down, because the majority of that hormone-producing areas are now taken out.

The Doctors: Extreme Weight Loss Transformation

Dr. Feiz said that not everyone is a good candidate for gastric sleeve surgery, but one of the reasons these women were good candidates was their medical problems due to their obesity, including sleep apnea and high blood pressure. Obesity is one of the leading causes of death.

When the ladies came out, I couldn’t believe my eyes! The ladies lost a combined total of 175 pounds and looked absolutely great. Dr. Travis urged them to look at portion sizes and being active, because while this surgery was a good start, it’s not a solution. Clarissa said that her mom cooks healthy now and they eat a lot of vegetables together and work out together. She said it’s a lot easier to be active now, too, because they don’t have the added weight slowing them down.
