The Drs: Severe Snake Phobia
The Doctors talked about Dr Jennifer Ashton’s severe snake phobia. She shared that she is deathly afraid of snakes, and even experiences chest pounding and sweating just seeing a snake on television. If she sees that a snake will appear on the show, she emails her producers and tells them she can’t do it. She loves animals, but absolutely hates snakes. She knows that it would be nice to not have the phobia, but feels it’s too late to do anything about it.
The Drs: Erase Phobias In Just 30 Minutes?
The Doctors shared that they heard there was a man who could erase phobias in just 30 minutes. He’s a Miami businessman named Gary Coxe and says he has helped thousands of people, although he’s not a doctor or a life coach. He’s helped people confront their lifelong fears and hosts seminars all over the world on how to control your thoughts and make the bad ones disappear.
Dr Travis Stork shared that research shows one in three adults suffer from a fear of snakes. Dr Ashton was backstage right then with Gary Coxe and another woman named Jasmine, who shares her fear of snakes. The Doctors wanted to put his techniques to the test to find out if during the course of the show, she could be cured of her phobia.
The Drs: Changing Mindset To Overcome Fears
Gary shared that he had a lot of tragedy in his past, so he became obsessed with how to remove things from his “emotional hard drive.” He said he was pretty confident that he could help the two women. Dr Stork said there’s a legitimate reason to be afraid of snakes, because they can kill you. He said if it works, there’s a “decent chance” he would try it himself.
Dr Ashton was brought to tears because she was absolutely terrified and was uneasy about what was about to happen. She said she has total trust in Gary, but she knows what’s coming, which is why she’s uneasy.
The Drs: What Causes Phobias?
Gary explained that the nervous system can’t tell the difference between imagination and reality. He said every time you paint a picture, whether it’s there or not, you’re digging your emotional grave. He wanted to change that in hopes of changing the reactions and the phobia overall.
The Drs: Overcoming Phobias
Jasmine and Dr Ashton were asked to work with Gary Coxe throughout the show to overcome their fears. Dr Ashton joined The Doctors on stage and shared that she had never experienced anything like it, because at one point she thought she was going to throw up.
They then had Jasmine walk out with a snake around her neck to show how far she progressed. Even more than that, Dr Ashton actually held a snake in her own hands and said she never would have thought anything like it was possible. She said she had total trust in Gary, although she nearly passed out.
The Drs: Conquering Snake Phobia
She said she doesn’t feel the physical symptoms at all. Gary explained that if you appreciate how powerful your mind is, you could master it to change your life for the better. He said everyone has something stuck in their emotional hard drive, so it’s all about changing how you think. He shared that Dr Ashton and Jasmine could use the same techniques in other areas of their life to gain control and think more clearly.
Dr Ashton had a hard time explaining it, but said she put herself in Gary’s hands and did exactly what he told her to do. Whenever she felt like she was going to faint, he knew how to deal with it. She kept repeating her mantra of wanting to be in control. Gary said Dr Ashton had bought into the fact that snakes are nasty, although she had never touched one. “This is amazing,” Gary said.
Dr Ashton then let a large snake be wrapped around her, truly showing how far she had come! Would you try Gary’s techniques to overcome a fear? What fear would you try to get rid of? Find out more about Coxe’s techniques in the book Don’t Let Others Rent Space In Your Head.
