The Doctors: How Far Would You Go To Have a Child?
The Doctors profiled one couple’s touching journey toward parenthood. How far would you go to have a child? This is Jessica and Stephen’s story of high risk pregnancy, and despite rough beginnings, it has a happy ending.
Jessica and Stephen were elated to be pregnant with their first child. The couple met online and eventually got engaged. When they got pregnant, their baby was very active. But by 37 weeks, the baby had died and was eventually delivered stillborn.
Though their first child passed away, the couple got pregnant again. But by 18 weeks, this child had a fatal disease and would be born without kidneys. Their son Jacob was born, and he lived for two days.

Stephen and Jessica were still determined to become parents. Dr Jennifer Ashton told Dr Travis Stork that “there is nothing more upsetting” than a stillborn delivery. Stork added that it must instill fear in the parents that this could happen again.

The Doctors talked with Stephen and Jessica, a couple who lost two children in two years of high risk pregnancy, about their determination to be parents.
“You have to take the miniscule steps of every pregnancy day to day,” she said. This couple was discouraged after the unsuccessful end of their second pregnancy. But they continued to move forward with a third pregnancy.
The Doctors: High Risk Pregnancy Doctors
Jessica and Stephen sat with The Doctors team to talk about their experience. On January 8, 2013, the couple gave birth to a daughter, Phoebe. Stephen said that they took this pregnancy step by step, just hoping that everything would be OK at the next ultrasound.
Jessica said that she and her husband worked with a doctor who specialized in high risk pregnancies during their second pregnancy. He was supportive and encouraging, and that was part of what inspired them to try again for a third child.
Dr Jennifer Ashton said it’s important for patients to know that it is OK to choose a doctor that is right for you. Do not worry that the doctor is going to be mad if you need or watch to switch to another provider.
The Drs TV: Riviera Maya Honeymoon
Jessica went backstage to get baby Phoebe and share her with the world. She looked like a beautiful, healthy young girl. The Doctors fawned over her, and she was a very good talk show guest.
The couple said they would like to continue to grow their family and have also talked about adoption in the future. The Doctors surprised the couple with the honeymoon they never had, sending them to Fairmont Mayakoba in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
