The Doctors: Homeless Boy Turned High School Valedictorian
The Doctors were back for a seventh season, and they kicked off the show by sharing the stories of some incredible people. Dr. Stork explained that when it comes to taking that extra step, no one compares to Griffin Furlong. Griffin explained that he can clearly remember visiting his mom in the hospital when he was six years old. He said it was one of the worst times of his life. He explained that his mom was in the hospital for about five or six years, but was always a happy person. He said that after his mom passed away, he and his brother promised each other that they would battle through everything in life no matter what came their way.

He said it was tough for his dad to hold down a job because of the medical bills. He shared that by the age of six, they had lost their home. He said he remembered his first night at the cold, strange shelter. He said he doesn’t even remember sleeping at night, and was scared because he didn’t know about his future. He and his brother didn’t want people to know they were homeless, and began to focus most on baseball and school. Griffin shared that his brother would always push him and make him stronger.

He said he was a baseball all-star and he was in a homeless shelter. Griffin’s brother explained that it was important for him to become valedictorian so that he wouldn’t have to worry about scholarships or getting into a school. Griffin said the first time he got straight As, he was shocked, but college wasn’t even on his mind.
“But look where I’m at today,” Griffin said. “I’m going to Florida State University and I was thankful enough to be valedictorian.”
They played a clip of Griffin’s valedictorian speech from his high school graduation where he told his fellow graduates to “never give up, no matter how bad you want to.”

He said when he was giving the speech, all he could think about what his mom. He shared that ever since he was nine years old, he wrote on the inside of his hats, “never give up” in honor of his mom.
The Doctors welcomed Griffin Furlong to the show, and said he had a 4.65 GPA. He said he was going to major in civil engineering. They told him that they knew his mom would be proud of him, so he should be proud of himself.
Griffin received an all expenses paid trip to South Africa for two. A very well-deserved surprise!
