The Doctors know that food can make a big difference when it comes to your health and preventing illnesses. Holistic nutritionist Yuri Elkaim explained that food is important for things like heart disease, diabetes, and dementia, because they’re really diseases of inflammation. There are certain anti-inflammatory foods like cold water fish, that includes sardines, anchovies, and wild salmon, that are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s help to reduce inflammation.
There was a study done in the ’60s over 20 years that showed just 30 grams, a small piece of fish, can decrease your risk of heart disease by half. Although the fish look nasty, you can find ways to enjoy them. Dr Jennifer Ashton said that she likes to mix sardines with hot sauce, chopped onions, and a bit of mayonnaise, on a piece of toast.
The Drs: Fight Heart Disease With Kale & Cinnamon
Yuri then moved on to share that kale is packed with all kinds of vitamins and nutrients. There are also fiber compounds in kale that bind to bile to help the body get rid of bile. This eventually reduces cholesterol, helping with heart disease.
Yuri explained that cinnamon is also beneficial to lower your risk of heart disease, because just half a teaspoon a day in a powdered form has been shown to drop your total cholesterol and improve markers of cholesterol.
The Drs: Lemon & Elderberry Benefits
Yuri likes lemon a lot too, because lemons are helpful in terms of vitamin C and can give flavor to greens to give them some life. You can also use garlic because it contains a compound that has been known to fight off bacteria.
Elderberry is also great for heart health, and can help fight influenza. Oregano oil, while incredibly potent, is great for you as well. Yuri is the author of The All-Day Energy Diet.
