The Drs TV: Dr Phil McGraw The 20/20 Diet Review
The Doctors kicked off their show by sharing that food is always on the mind and now that Christmas is around the corner, it’s hard to avoid packing on the pounds. Many people resort to crazy fad diets to try to lose the extra weight, but there is no such thing as a quick fix. To help discuss how you can control your eating and lose weight during the holidays, The Doctors welcomed Dr Phil McGraw.
Dr Travis Stork said this time of year is about getting in the right mindset. Dr Phil explained that we just simply have to use food for the right reason. He said if you use food for nutritional purposes, you’re fine, but the problem results from using food to celebrate or because you’re depressed. Ten years ago Dr Phil wrote the book The Ultimate Weight Solution. Now, Dr Phil wrote a new book called The 20/20 Diet, which, as Dr Phil said, is about turning your weight loss vision into reality.
The Doctors: Why Diets Fail
Dr Phil said in the last 10 years there has been a lot of emerging science, so he knew there was enough to update things. Dr Phil said the first thing he did was figure out why most diets fail, so they conducted a national survey. They first found out that over 40% of the people who lose weight on a diet gain 100% of it back within 90 days.
He found that the #1 reason diets fail is because of hunger. He said “hungry people are going to eat” so if you’re hungry on a diet, you’re going to eat and rebel against the diet. He knew he had to design something that would make people feel full.
Another reason diets fail is because people get bored of eating the same things over and over again. Also, people get cravings and you eventually cave which is not about willpower. Also for a lot of people, the diets are impractical and expensive. He shared that when you go to a fast food restaurant, what you’re paying for food costs is only about 17%.
The Drs TV: Obese Woman Wanting To Change Lifestyle
The Doctors wanted to take a closer look at a woman named Jennifer’s story. Jennifer shared that she has struggled with her weight her entire life and growing up she ate a lot of fried chicken, homemade cakes, and cookies. When she was 19 years old, her mom sent her to get fast food for her and when she came back, she found her mom outside sitting on her swing dead.
She currently weighs 236 pounds and her 12-year-old daughter weighs 198 pounds. Her son is 9 years old and he weighs 146 pounds. Her husband weighs 232 pounds. She shared that she loves to cook and often makes chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, fried chicken, pancakes and sausage, biscuits and gravy, and Toaster Strudel.
She explained that she tried diets in the past, but her kids will go hungry and diet foods are very expensive. With her schedule, it’s easier to get the fattening food that’s easier to heat up. She said she’s asking for help because she wants to break the cycle and doesn’t want her kids to find her the way she found her mom. The Doctors shared with Jennifer that she’s in the morbidly obese category and her blood pressure runs high in her family. She’s at risk for so many illnesses that can lead to an early death and they hope that the show would be a turning point for Jennifer.
The Doctors: Breaking Family Obesity Cycle
Dr Stork revealed that Jennifer is drinking about 80 ounces of soda every day, which is over 1,600 calories from pure sugar and soda alone. Dr Phil wanted to know why he should believe Jennifer when she says she wants to lose weight. She said just the other day her daughter went to the doctor and when she stepped on the scale she started crying, and she knew that she caused it.
Dr Phil said there’s a bit of a legacy going on given how her mother lived and then passed away, how she has been living her life, and then now how her daughter is living her life. Jennifer said she’s ready to break the cycle, and Dr Phil said he would “haunt Jennifer to the ends of the earth.” He said the way Jennifer is living now, she doesn’t stand a chance unless she changes her lifestyle.
