The Doctors: Is She Tanning Too Much?
The Doctors kicked off their show today by talking to Kori, a young mother who is obsessed with tanning. She started tanning when she was 13. She wanted to fit in with everybody because they were all tanning, too. Now, she goes tanning six to seven times a week. She sometimes goes twice in the same day. She never uses sunscreen or anything with an SPF. She uses baby oil and Afro Sheen regularly.

The Doctors had a health scare experiment for a young mother who is obsessed with tanning. They showed her what she would look like if she kept tanning and had her meet someone with Stage 4 Melanoma. (dotshock / Shutterstock.com)
“When I tan, it makes me feel better about myself. I feel thinner. I’m more self-confident,” she said. She also said that when she looks in the mirror when she hasn’t laid in a tanning bed in a while, she feels like she can see every one of her flaws.
Kori has a nine-year-old daughter that sees her tan all the time and she yells at her about tanning and thinks she tans too much. Kori’s friend Olivia said she’s concerned about her friend’s health. Olivia has had two serious pre-cancerous moles, so she would think Kori would’ve changed her ways a bit after that.
Kori said she doesn’t drink or smoke, so tanning is her only vice. “It’s my treat to myself,” she said.
The Drs TV: Tanning Health Scare Experiment
The Doctors sent her to oncologist Dr. Lawrence Piro, who decided to before a health scare experiment on Kori, with her permission. Kori said that she never wears protective goggles when she’s in the tanning booth. Dr. Piro said that excessive exposure to UV radiation can cause eye damage.
For that reason, Dr. Piro had Kori put on a special pair of glasses so she’d know what it felt like to have cataracts. Kori tried to walk with them and she said she felt really wobbly.
The Doctors: Tanning Causes Permanent Wrinkles
Dr. Piro then moved onto wrinkles. Up to 90 percent of skin aging is caused by the sun. Some wrinkles can be fixed with plastic surgery, but a lot can’t, like fine lines and weathery skin. So Dr. Piro had makeup artists do up Kori’s face to look like it would in 20 years if she kept tanning the way she has been. She looked really bad with the makeup and her friend Olivia even commented on how bad she looked.
The Drs TV: Tanning Can Cause Stage 4 Melanoma
Then it was time for Kori to meet Summer, who has Stage 4 Melanoma. When Summer was 23, she had a mole removed. They weren’t sure if it was Melanoma, so Summer didn’t do any treatment. Then when she was 36, she had a reoccurance. By then, the Melanoma had sat in her body for 13 years before they declared themselves.
By the time doctors caught it again, they had spread to her vital organs. Summer said that she has four kids and it makes her angry when she sees people with a perfect bill of health not take advantage of it. She said she would do everything to have that.
Kori said didn’t even know what to say. Kori said she never realized how selfish she was being. Dr. Piro said he hoped that when Kori goes to a tanning salon, that she sees Summer.
