The Doctors: Body Odors Come from Bacteria
Several gentlemen and a lady sent in videos to The Doctors TV show about a problem that stinks.
The first man said that every few weeks his feet smell like rotten apples. He’s tried creams and nothing has worked, and the doctors said it’s not athlete’s foot. The next man said that he’s outdoors a lot and sometimes gets cuts and scrapes. Every so often, his cuts will smell. A woman said that she has a friend whose head stinks. She’s tried different shampoos and cutting her hair, but it still smells terrible.
Dr. Travis Stork said that most of the bad smells coming off your body are due to bacteria.
The Drs: Causes of Smelly Feet
Dr. Stork said your foot has 250,000 sweat glands, and can produce up to a half a cup of sweat each day. It’s a breeding ground for bacteria in your sock.
Dr. Jim Sears said that the rotten smell is from sulfur compounds that are released from bacteria when you sweat. Dr. Lisa Masterson said that if your feet smell like stinky cheese, this is not a good thing. The cheesy smell comes from having too much of the brevibacteria that’s found in some cheeses.
Dr. Andrew Ordon said that an ammonia smell to your feet could mean that you have a high protein, low or no carbohydrate diet. When your body breaks down amino acids, it can lead to an ammonia-like smell.
The Doctors: Wounds That Smell Mean Bacteria
Dr. Stork said that when you have a cut, no matter where it is you need to clean it and irrigate it to prevent redness. You don’t want any pus, and wounds that smell bad are a problem. Dr. Ordon said that if you have wounds that smell like old grapes, it could be a sign of the bacteria pseudomonas aeruginosa (pronounced: sue-da-monis ara-gin-osa).
If your wound starts smelling like rotten meat, it’s probably an anaerobic bacteria which tends to be a deeper infection like a pus pocket. If that’s happening, you need to see your doctor to get your wound drained.
The Doctors: Smelly Scalps and Bad Breath
In terms of smelly scalps, your head secretes a fatty substance when you sweat out of your hair glands. Bacteria love this substance. Out of nowhere, bliss guru Kym Douglas popped out and said that there was someone in the audience with a smelly problem.
A girl in the audience said that she loves her boyfriend and thinks he’s wonderful, but he has really bad breath from smoking. She wants to be able to kiss him all the time but sometimes it’s so bad. He defended himself and said that he didn’t think it was bad and that he only smokes when he’s out with the boys.
The Drs TV: Lemon Wedge with Salt to Fix Bad Breath
Dr. Stork said that when your girlfriend tells you that you have bad breath, you need to do something about it. Douglas had a solution for dealing with bad breath in a pinch. She suggested taking a lemon wedge and sprinkling salt on it, then sucking on the wedge. The salt will kill bacteria and the lemon will make the salt taste better.
After the guy tried this, his girlfriend agreed to kiss him. Check out Douglas’ trick in the video below.
