The Doctors: La Toya Jackson Show On OWN
The Doctors invited La Toya Jackson on the show to discuss her father’s numerous strokes and she even had a health question for The Drs. But first, they wanted to know what she has been up to with her life.
Jackson said she recently wrote a book about her life, Starting Over, landed a spot on the all-star edition of Celebrity Apprentice and has her own show coming up on the Oprah Winfrey Network called Life With La Toya. She is also taking care of Michael Jackson’s three children, something she said she loves doing.
The Drs: Joe Jackson Stoke
The Doctors told Jackson they brought her on the show to talk about her father’s stroke and to inform other people of the warning signs for a stroke. Jackson told them her father had more than one stroke – he had three strokes.
She said he was at his house when he had the strokes and had just enough energy to call one of his friends to come over. When his friend arrived, Joe Jackson opened the door and fell to the ground. When his friend tried to take him to the hospital Joe refused to go, but his friend thankfully forced him to go.
Dr. Travis Stork said a lot of people, especially men, will just say they are fine. He recounted the numerous times he was working in the hospital and someone would tell him a man was feeling ill the night before and couldn’t feel their right arm but they figured they could sleep it off.
The Doctors: Ischemis Strokes and Hemmorrhagic Strokes
The Doctors wanted to explain the difference in the two kinds of strokes a person can have. The first, an ischemis stroke, is a complete blockage of a blood vessel. Without the blood flowing to the brain, the brain will become depleted of oxygen and die. The other type of stroke is a hemmorrhagic stroke. This type of stroke happens when a vein bursts and the blood flow to certain parts of the brain is inhibited, causing those parts of the brain to die.
The Drs: Symptoms Of Stroke
The Doctors said if you are not sure if someone is having a stroke, try the following techniques to find out:
- Ask them to smile – If the smile is drooping, it could be the sign of a stroke
- Ask them to say a common phrase – A stroke is going to affect the person’s speech
- Ask them to stand up straight – If a person if having a stroke, their balance is going to be off and standing straight will be difficult
The Doctors: La Toya Jackson Smelly Urine From Asparagus
Jackson said she recently had a friend over to her house and when he was done using the restroom she said it smelled terrible. A couple weeks later she was using the restroom after dinner and her urine smelled the same way. She went to the doctor to find out what was wrong and he told her it was the asparagus she ate for dinner.
The Doctors explained the B vitamins in the asparagus caused the smell and the yellow, green tint of the urine.
