The Doctors TV show received an email from Sally in Omaha, Nebraska.

“Dear Doctors, I recently had a baby and my nipples got really dark for some reason. Why does this happen and are they ever going to go back?”

The Drs: Darkening Nipples from Pregnancy & Does IBS Cause Anal Damage

If you had darkening nipples after your pregnancy, your hormones are responsible.

Dr. Andrew Ordon said that nipples come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Dr. Jim Sears joked that the darker nipples give babies a target to aim for when nursing.

The Drs: Hormones Cause Nipples to Darken During Pregnancy

Dr. Rachael Ross said that when nipples change, it spices things up and give a couple variety so they should embrace it.

Dr. Lisa Masterson said that hormones cause the darkening of the nipples, and they should lighten up after delivery but they’ll never be as light as they were. Many women associate the darker nipples with aging and Dr. Masterson said that’s not the case.

The vascular system also plays a role in the darkening of nipples. Learn more about darkening nipples in the video below.

The Doctors: Does Irritable Bowel Syndrome Cause Anal Damage?

Joshua from St. Louis, Missouri wrote to The Doctors and said that he’s been having major problems in the bathroom. He wondered if his Irritable Bowel Syndrome could cause permanent damage to his anal sphincter.

Dr. Jorge Rodriguez said the answer was no and that Irritable Bowel Syndrome is basically spasming of the intestine. The spasming can cause cramping, pain and constipation, or the reversal–diarrhea.

Some things do cause damage to the anal sphincter, like getting older and having a lot of children.
