The Doctors: 50 Moving Forward Initiative
In the next two years, people over the age of 50 are going to represent half of all the people in America. Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall, a women over 50 and the Chief Medical Officer at Pfizer, doesn’t see 50 as the new 30 or the new 40. She said 50 is the age when you can really show that you still have what it takes to be a healthy, fun, active person. To help motivate more people over 50 to start living a healthier lifestyle, Pfizer and the YMCA teamed up to launch a program called 50 Moving Forward, an initiative that encourages people over the age of 50 to adopt healthier lifestyles.

The Doctors looked at the 50 Moving Forward initiative promoted by the YMCA to help people over 50 take control of their lifestyles.
Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall said the entire program focuses on living a healthy lifestyle while teaching people how to exercise properly, eat properly and take care of themselves properly.
Dr. Andrew Ordon noted that 75 percent of people over the age of 50 will develop a chronic disease at some point in their life. He also said studies have shown inactive people have more hospital stays, they visit the doctor more often and they take more pills than a person who lives an active, healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall went on to say that inactive people have been shown to develop heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and a number of other illness more often than someone who lives a healthy lifestyle.
Important Exams For Everyone Over 50
While it is always good to start living a healthy lifestyle, Dr. Travis Stork said there are a number of tests everyone over the age of 50 should have done annually.
- Blood pressure
- Cholesterol
- Glucose
- Cancer
Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall suggested everyone over 50 try to build their social networks as well saying studies have shown people who socialize more have delayed memory loss and lower mortality rates.
You can sign up for the YMCA’s 50 Moving Forward initiative at your local YMCA to learn how to change your lifestyle from unhealthy to healthy.
