The Doctors: What Color Should Breast Milk Be?

The Doctors talked about acceptable colors for breast milk and other body fluids.

The Doctors: White Poop Causes

Dr. Jim Sears said adults and children with white or pale poop may have something going on with their liver, which produces the bile that makes stool dark. It can be a side effect of medication, but if you notice this, it is best to call your doctor.

The Doctors: White Tongue Warning Signs

Dr. Travis Stork showed a picture of white tongue, caused by a coating of debris and bacteria. He said that often a white tongue is harmless, but this is why you should gently brush your tongue every day while brushing your teeth.

But in some cases, this can indicate a yeast overgrowth called thrush. If your tongue suddenly appears white, and won’t go away, it’s time to call the doctor.

The Drs TV Show: What Color is Breast Milk?

Dr. Lisa Masterson said that breast milk can come in different shades, and isn’t as white as cow’s milk. She added that when breast milk is first coming in, it can be clear or yellowish because of colostrum, which helps with a baby’s digestion. After a few weeks, it will transition to a whiter hue.

However, if breast milk is pink, or you notice blood discharge or pain, that can indicate an infection or dietary issues. Consult your doctor about changes in your breast milk.

The Doctors: Does White Noise Help Babies Sleep?

A woman wrote that her baby is having trouble sleeping. She wondered if it’s true that white noise can help with this problem. Dr. Jim Sears said this is true.

White noise is a repetitive whoosh or hum that soothes babies and may remind them of sounds they heard in the womb. White noise DVDs and smartphone apps are available. Or you can just turn on an appliance, like a hair dryer, to see if it calms your baby down.

Dr. Jim Sears did offer a cautionary note: Don’t leave a baby unattended with a running appliance. It can present fire and choking hazards.
