The Doctors: Bacteria Causes Bad Breath
Mickey is a self-proclaimed sugar-free gum addict who said she chews gum to mask her constant bad breath. Even though she brushes her teeth, brushes her tongue and flosses, she can not seem to get rid of the her bad breath.
“At the end of the day, chewing gum is only going to be masking a problem,” Dr. Miguel Stanley said. “The source of these odors are bacteria and chewing gum is not going to kill the bacteria.”
Reasons For Bad Breath
Dr. Stanley said there are two reasons she could have bad breath.
- The artificial sweeteners in the gum can not be broken down by our gut meaning it will cause bloating and excess gas. This can lead to bacterial buildup in the body and bad breath.
- The bacteria sitting far back on the tongue is the bacteria that makes breath smell. Dr. Stanley said it is important to brush as far back on the tongue as possible because that is the area where food and bacteria will collect.
Dr. Stanley said bacteria can also reside in the area between the teeth and the gums but our toothbrushes won’t reach that area. This is the main reason everyone should see the dentist regularly. Proper cleanings need to take place for hygienic reasons.
Acetone Smelling Breath Could Be Diabetes
There are lots of different kinds of breaths. There is dragon breath, there is baby breath, there is fecal breath and then there is acetone breathe. While you may smell acetone on your breath when you wake up in the morning, The Doctors said it is not normal to smell the acetone all day.
While The Doctors said the fruity smell from your breath could be from your low carb diet, it could also be coming from type 1 diabetes. They explained when the body does not have enough insulin, it can not break down the sugar in the body. This causes the body to use fat as the main source of energy and causes a acetone smell.
The Doctors said this may be the only indicator a person has developed type 1 diabetes. While a child may look and feel healthy, if you notice the child using the bathroom often and their breath smells like acetone it is time to see a doctor. While you’re at the doctor, you might want to have your mouth checked for cancer as well suggested Dr. Stanley. According to him there are 100s of different cancers that start in the mouth and it is best to catch them early.
