The Doctors: Urge Incontinence in Women
The Doctors TV show talked about something painful and embarrassing that affects 15 million American women–overactive bladder.
Raquel, who is only 25, has a dozen bladder contractions a day from urge incontinence. Even a small amount of urine can give her contractions, so going to the bathroom doesn’t always help. She is a nurse, and when she has to do patient care, she’ll often have bladder contractions that require her to stop what she’s doing.
The Doctors: Botox For Overactive Bladder
Raquel visited Dr. Jennifer Gruenenfelder for urodynamics testing to see if she is a good candidate for Botox in the bladder, which is a new treatment. She filled Raquel’s bladder with dye so that they could take x-rays.
Dr. Gruenenfelder saw a lot of spasms in Raquel and decided that she’d be a good candidate for the Botox. The doctor then did 20 tiny injections of Botox into her bladder.
The Doctors: Overactive Bladder Pills Have Bad Side Effects
Dr. Gruenenfelder visited The Drs. to talk about the new overactive bladder fix. Dr. Andrew Ordon said that most people associate Botox with wrinkles and plastic surgery, which is his line of work.
There are pills out for people with overactive bladder, but patients don’t like them. They have side effects like dry mouth, dry eyes and constipation. For Raquel, it was either take a pill every day for the rest of her life or undergo a quick five minute procedure.
The Doctors: Always Bring Up Incontinence Problems with Your Doctor
Dr. Gruenenfelder said that Botox is great because you inject it only into the bladder and then you’re done and you don’t have the systemic side effects. Dr. Lisa Masterson said that a lot of patients come into her office and are too embarrassed to bring it up, but they need to talk to their doctors about it.
You doctor will be able to determine if it’s overactive bladder or urge incontinence. You need the right diagnosis in order to get the right treatment. Overactive bladder can be debilitating, and if you qualify for the Botox treatment, it can change your life.
The Doctors: Botox for Male Prostate
Dr. Gruenenfelder said there are clinical trials going on right now for men regarding injecting Botox into the prostate. Men who have problems with their prostate can develop an overactive bladder.
Raquel noticed a big difference in the first two days and is now contraction-free! See her procedure in the video below.
