The Doctors TV Show today was called Hints Your Body Is Trying To Tell You, and one of the topics they covered was bruises. Dr Travis Stork said that there are subtle hints that could be a sign of something more serious. When should you worry about a bruise? And what is the normal life of a bruise in terms of color changes?
The Drs TV Show: Bruise Lifecycle
Dr Travis Stork said that you should worry about a bruise when you have excessive bruising or unexplained bruising. But it is normal for bruises to change colors. When you get a bruise, your blood vessels burst and bleed into your tissues. The first color of a bruise is usually red, and this is from the actual blood. Then, by day 2 the bruise turns purple as the hemoglobin breaks down. Around day 6 the bruise will turn a green color, and within a few more days you will have a yellow bruise. Generally, after a few weeks your bruises should diminish. If you are getting bruises in places where you have not hit yourself though, you should go get your blood levels checked to make sure that you are not anemic and that your blood clotting factors are ok.
The Drs: Aspirin Causes Bruises
Dr Andrew Ordon said that as you age, you lose collagen and your capillaries get more fragile, both of which can lead to bruising more easily. If you are getting lots of bruises, you should also check to make sure you are not taking a medication like aspirin or a supplement that can make you more prone to getting bruises.
