Cookie Johnson: Magic Johnson Foundation
Magic Johnson and his wife, Cookie, married in 1991. Just months later, the L.A. Laker made his famous retirement speech, in which he announced to the world he had been diagnosed with HIV. Although we’ve made incredible strides in HIV awareness since that time, we still have a long way to go. Cookie Johnson stopped by The Doctors to discuss HIV awareness and why education is so important.
The Doctors: Cookie Johnson Truth Jeans
Dr. Rachael Ross was sporting a great pair of jeans designed by Cookie herself. $10 from every purchase of Cookie Johnson Truth Jeans goes to the Magic Johnson Foundation. Cookie said that the name “Truth” means education when it comes to HIV. “The real truth is that this disease is totally preventable if we act responsibly,” she said.
Cookie Johnson: HIV Awareness
Cookie and Magic have touched millions and millions of people through their work. Paige, 19, is an HIV advocate and patient, who was born HIV positive. She said that strangers tell her that she doesn’t seem like the “typical” HIV positive American. The truth is, there’s no such thing as “typical” when it comes to HIV.
Dr. Jennifer Ashton felt silly even saying it, but she emphasized that you can’t catch HIV through hugging, holding hands, kissing, or being close to someone who is HIV positive.
Dr Jennifer Berman: Menopause House Call
Dr. Jennifer Berman also made an important house call to a 50-year-old woman living through “hormonal hell.” When she described symptoms such as hair loss, weight gain, mood swings, night sweats, hot flashes, and very erratic sleep, Dr. Berman knew the woman was experiencing menopause.
After testing, Dr. Berman found low estrogen levels, thyroid levels, and hormonal imbalances. In order to optimize hormone balance, she prescribed medicines and an estrogen patch. Problem solved!
