The Doctors: Circumcised By Mistake in South Miami Hospital

The Doctors TV Show mentioned that a baby was recently Circumcised By Mistake at South Miami Hospital.  The baby’s name is Mario Delgado and the mother of the baby is Vera Delgado.  The Drs TV Show brought up the entire circumcision debate, which was also recently covered on the Dr Oz Show.

Vera Delgado said that her baby was circumcised even though she never consented to the procedure.  She cried for days when she found out about the mistake.  The Drs mentioned that in the Latino culture, they do not usually circumcise their babies.  Apparently the Circumcision Mistake happened because the doctor misread the consent form, but it is too little too late because the damage is already done.

The Doctors mentioned that the prevalence of circumcision is trending downward, just like Dr Oz mentioned on his program on the topic.  One reason for the decrease in circumcision is because insurance companies have stopped covering it, claiming it to be a cosmetic procedure.  I found this to be an interesting point that was not mentioned on the Dr Oz Show.  Both shows gave the same statistics, which is that circumcision rates are now down to the mid-30% range.  Dr Lisa Masterson said that there are health risks of not being circumcised – like Penile Cancer and the added protection from HIV and AIDS that removing the foreskin provides.  However, it was also pointed out that 229 babies die each year from circumcision whereas only 200 men die from Penile Cancer each year.  And the Circumcision Debate goes on…
