The Doctors: Ebola Virus
The Doctors previously talked about the Enterovirus, an infection that isn’t currently killing people, but then moved on to talk about a virus that is: Ebola.
The Ebola virus has effected thousands of people in West Africa and the latest numbers show 2,300 deaths and another 2,000 cases. Dr. Travis Stork said the virus is mainly effecting people in five countries: Senegal, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria. However, there are now known cases in Congo, but the World Health Organization reported that this is not related to the West African outbreak.
In Liberia over the last few weeks, the death rate has been over 60%, and that’s why Dr. Travis Stork felt the need for a call to action.

He said he feels as if the media blew something up but then moved on to start talking more about the Enterovirus instead. According to Dr. Stork, what we have to keep in mind is that the Ebola virus is killing people every day. Just because it’s on another continent doesn’t mean we shouldn’t worry about it. Like Dr. Jim Sears said, this virus is just a plane ride away.
Dr. Rachael Ross pointed out that the U.S. has given over $100 million in resources, and sent a hundred doctors to West Africa, but as a group we need to do more. She explained that people are dying in these foreign countries simply because they don’t have the money or resources to treat it properly.
Dr. Ross said she believes eventually the Ebola virus will become a problem of our own when it arrives in our country, but until then we need to commit our resources to send some money over there.
The Doctors: Need For Money & Resources In West Africa
Dr. Stork said that what bothers him is how long it takes. He said we need to know that this is not something that is “just over there.” He said that the minute the Ebola virus infects someone in this country that isn’t in a hospital, suddenly people are going to be willing to give whatever they can. He said “this is a scary virus” and that we know it requires contact with bodily fluids.
He said health care providers are wearing protective gear at all times, and are still learning about the disease itself. Dr. Ross talked about the medication that could potentially be used to save a large number of people, but it has only really been tested in monkeys.
Dr. Stork explained that treatment is still questionable and we are still looking into vaccines but the hope is to develop a vaccine in the next year. Until then, we need a greater response from people in the U.S. who can help with money and resources for those in West Africa.
Bill and Melinda Gates just gave a $50 million contribution to help fight the Ebola virus, and Dr. Ross said we should all consider contributing as well.
The Drs TV: Charlie Sheen Pays Waiter After LeSean McCoy Leaves 20 Cent Tip
Moving on to a lighter topic, The Doctors shared their #SMOCK picture of the week. SMOCK stands for simple moments of contagious kindness, and Dr. Travis Stork shared that the person who showed a simple act of kindness was actually actor Charlie Sheen.
It was in the news that professional football player LeSean McCoy only tipped his waiter 20 cents, so Charlie Sheen decided to send the waiter $1,000 with autographed $100 bills. Tommy Up, the owner of PYT Burger in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, said, “Charlie Sheen is a real American hero and icon. Our entire staff is touched by his kindness. We couldn’t have been #smocked by a nicer guy!”
Charlie Sheen commented as well saying that he is beyond humbled by the tribute and that he “learned early on the only way to embrace and and find balance on this amazing and difficult journey is to give something back each and every day.”
The Doctors: #SMOCK Video Of The Week
They then shared their #SMOCK video of the week, which was sent it by Nicki in Chicago. She paid the toll for the next six people behind her in line at the toll booth. As Dr. Sears said, it was just a couple of dollars and that probably made some of those people’s day.
