The Chew: Healthy Food Habits

Are you worried about what your scale shows? Overweight people, according to BMI, are often more likely to live longer. But don’t go opening the tubs of ice cream just yet: the hosts all agreed that BMI is not a good indicator of healthiness.
Clinton Kelly kicked off today’s Healthy New Year special by talking about healthy food habits. Before the show, he asked each of the hosts to list their healthiest food habit and least healthy food habit. Then, he had the rest of the hosts guess who said what.
The first one was, whose healthiest habit was having a shot of liver oil every morning? This was no contest. Everyone immediately knew it was Daphne Oz, the host with the most “out there” approach to food health. “Why not?” Oz asked everyone. She said it moisturizes the hair and skin.
Which one said eating a balanced diet was healthiest? It was Michael Symon. He said one day a week he lets himself have a crazy cheat day, but most days he eats pretty well. Then, it was onto unhealthy habits. Who eats ice cream for dinner sometimes? Carla Hall. She looked very guilty when everyone pointed at her.
The Chew: Body Mass Indexes
Today’s hot plate topic was that a new study has shown people with higher body mass indexes (BMI), indicating they are overweight, often live longer. Is this true?
Daphne Oz, Michael Symon and Clinton Kelly all agreed that BMI is not a good indicator of healthiness. Muscle weighs more than fat, so often even if you don’t have an ounce of fat on your body, you may be overweight or obese according to BMI. Clinton Kelly’s own BMI was 26.8, which puts him in the overweight category, even though he is thin and muscular.
The Chew: Michael Symon Too Bulky?
Michael Symon’s friend Bobby Flay recently said that Michael Symon was “bulky” and couldn’t run as fast as he could. So Michael Symon and Bobby Flay had a race and Michael Symon won.
Michael Symon was really offended by the description of being “bulky.” Mario Batali told him he didn’t think Bobby Flay meant it as an insult.
