Kelly & Michael: Asimo Humanoid Robot Knows American Sign Language

Kelly & Michael: Honda Asimo Robot

The humanoid robot Asimo made his grand return to Live! With Kelly and Michael on April 15, 2014, and he had a great time. Ten years ago, viewers were introduced to Honda’s Asimo, a humanoid robot. Now he’s made his first appearance in the United States with all new abilities.

Kelly and Michael: Asimo Technical Difficulties

He ran out to Kelly and Michael who were very excited to see what he’s capable of now. “Hello, Kelly. Nice to see you again,” he said. Kelly tried to continue to talk to Asimo and exchange pleasantries, but it didn’t work out the way they wanted. Asimo just stood there silently for quite a long time. People didn’t know what to do and laughed nervously. Then after an awkward moment, Asimo  turned and said hello to Michael without responding to Kelly.

Honda’s Eric Wedin came out on stage to talk about Asimo and his new capabilities. He’s very proud of Asimo’s accomplishments. Asimo was created to help people around the house and in their daily lives. Asimo is four feet tall, which is the perfect height for what he was created for.

Asimo and Wedin showed off Asimo’s new capabilities. He hopped around on one foot. Wedin explained that this shows an advancement in balance control and stability.

Asimo also showed that he can sign. He can control his fingers and communicate in American Sign Language (ASL). He can also sign in Japanese. Michael didn’t know there were different sign languages. “Good morning. My name is Asimo,” Asimo signed. This was perfect because it showed that Asimo can communicate and can be very helpful with deaf people.

Kelly & Michael: Asimo Dance Party

Weldin said it’s taken years of research to come this far. Asimo first came out in 2000. He’s almost 14 now!

Kelly remembered that Asimo could dance from the first time he came on the show 10 years ago. So they had a dance party. Asimo took the lead and Kelly and Michael just tried to follow along. They even tried to follow his exact dance moves. In the end, Kelly tried to talk but Asimo interrupted. “Thank you Kelly. Thank you Michael. I love New York,” he said over Kelly.
