Kelly & Michael: Brooklyn Decker is Melissa McCarthy’s Step Mother-In-Law
Melissa McCarthy came by to talk to Michael & Brooklyn Decker about her new movie Tammy. She shared a nice hug with Brooklyn Decker, and Michael asked if they knew each other. McCarthy said it was awkward, but Decker was her step mother-in-law. She played her husband Ben Falcone’s step mom on film. Ben always said how nice Decker was.
Kelly & Michael: Tammy Movie Idea
McCarthy and Ben wrote Tammy together. He came up with some crazy dream and stumbled down the stairs when he woke up and said he had a crazy dream where McCarthy went on a road trip with her grandma and she might be an alcoholic “and I think she sleeps around and I think we’re gonna write it.” McCarthy did not get it, but they were still talking about it a month later. Six years later they finally made the movie.
Kelly & Michael: Melissa McCarthy Kids
Michael asked about McCarthy’s summer plans. She said she doesn’t want to move from her backyard when she gets back to LA. She must have a nice backyard. She wants to watch her kids and swim. Her kids like to do weird things on the trampoline. McCarthy said the moves are not that different, but the kids always think they are.
Her kids are seven and four. They’re into wearing her high heels. She talked about her kids’ antics. Michael asked if her kids are more like her or Ben. The older one looks like her and acts like Ben. She’s really mellow. They showed a picture of McCarthy and Ben. The little one looks like Ben and acts like her.

Kelly & Michael: Melissa McCarthy Childhood
Michael asked McCarthy what she was like as a child. She was a handful. They showed some pictures. She wasn’t shy. She grew up on a farm and didn’t have many neighbors, so she just went outside and made stuff up. Decker asked if she had animals, and McCarthy said no, but she thought they did for a long time.
Her mom said when she was around three something happened that made her absolutely determined that they had cows somewhere. Her mom has a summer’s worth of pictures of her searching for the cows. McCarthy had a crazy amount of cats though. At one point they had 25 or 30. They took in a lot of strays. All the cats would come out when people came by and they would freak out.
Kelly & Michael: Who is Tammy?
Susan Sarandon was on the show on June 24 2014 and they talked about McCarthy. She wasn’t so sure how she felt about that. Michael asked her who Tammy is. McCarthy said that she and Ben are both from small towns in Illinois, and Tammy is a girl who feels a little stuck and blames the world. She makes a lot of bad decisions, but has a good heart. They wanted to see how hard you have to hit her to knock her out of her cycle, and they gave her a pretty good bump. She eventually hits the road with Susan Sarandon.
Kelly & Michael: Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone Writing Process
Brooklyn Decker asked McCarthy if she has any special rituals with Ben because they wrote together and are married. She said the house is useless because they have little kids. They drop the kids off at school and write on napkins in the car. They also passed a laptop back and forth. They even wrote in the car when they were in the Groundlings. She also tries to never have her phone on in the house.
Kelly & Michael Tammy Review
They played a clip of Tammy. In the clip, Tammy thanks Mark Duplass for bailing her grandma out. He said anyone would have, but she said that’s not true. He liked her hair. She said that she gets what’s going on because he’s had a taste of Tammy and now he wants more. She said she’s like a Cheeto because you can’t eat just one even though that’s the Lay’s slogan. Tammy’s a Cheeto person. It was hilarious. Tammy will be in theaters on July 2 2014.
