Kelly and Michael: Lena Dunham
Lena Dunham, the talented creator and star of the HBO series Girls, returned to Kelly and Michael after about a year away, to talk about the show’s third season.
The holidays can be a nerve-wracking time for a lot of people, which is why Lena and her boyfriend decided to bring their families together for Christmas. But the good news is that everything went well.
“My concern was not as much with his parents. It was more with my own,” she said. “It makes you really have faith that humans can love.”

Then came New Year’s Eve, which Kelly called “a New York holiday around the world,” since we see the ball drop from everywhere. Dunham, however, hates New Year’s. “I wish we could cancel it and life would just be one long year,” she said. She did manage to stay up until 12:30 a.m., eating pasta and spending time with a Frank Sinatra impersonator.
As a child growing up in New York, she never got to go to Times Square to see the ball drop in person, and was always told to avoid the area. One year, she found herself on MacDougal Street near NYU, where someone tried to offer her ether.

Dunham is also marking the first year of living on her own. She lived with her parents until age 26 1/2, which was great for her. They eventually encouraged her to leave the nest, encouraging her to do her own thing. Her first night in her new apartment was upsetting, but now she is settled in her small place, which she said is overstuffed and looks like a garage sale. She might be a hoarder!
Kelly & Michael: Girls Season 3 on HBO
Michael Strahan called Dunham a genius and prodded her about season three of Girls. “Nothing ever happens on this show,” Lena admitted of her series. Kelly Ripa once again said that she sees the show as a cultural guide to growing into adulthood in New York City.
The season is exploring the line between being lost after college and becoming the family member everyone is worried about. The new season of the HBO series will find the girls in some new circumstances.
The series has now filmed in every borough of New York City, and Lena Dunham loves getting to be on location. However, it is getting harder to control the locations as the show is becoming more popular.
In a scene from an upcoming episode, Jessa and Hannah are reconnecting after they haven’t seen one another for awhile. You can tune in for the new season beginning Sunday, January 12 2014 on HBO.
