Actor, writer, and director Joseph Gordon-Levitt got a warm reception from the crowd and a look at some of his long-ago roles to start off his interview with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. He talked about how his love of filmmaking came together for the new movie Don Jon.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt: 10 Things I Hate About You Review
The last time Gordon-Levitt was on Live! was back in 1999, when he was promoting the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. He said it was filmed at a public high school in Tacoma, Washington. Then he moved to New York City to study poetry at Columbia.

“You can walk down the street in New York and just see people,” Gordon-Levitt said. He enjoyed walking around, which you can’t do as easily in the LA suburbs where he grew up.
Were the other students distracted by his celebrity? Gordon-Levitt said he did not think it was too much of a problem, and he tried to be inconspicuous.
Kelly and Michael: Joseph Gordon-Levitt + Channing Tatum
There are rumors swirling that he and Channing Tatum will co-star in a remake of Guys and Dolls. Gordon-Levitt called his friend “Chan” and remembered working with him in 2003 on Havoc. Since then, they have made two more films.
“We want to make some kind of musical. We’re trying to figure out what it could be,” he said.
It doesn’t sound like Gordon-Levitt will be joining “Chan” for the Magic Mike sequel, but he did get to parody the movie on Saturday Night Live.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote, directed, and starred in the new movie Don Jon. He said it was a long process and he is excited for it to finally come out for audiences.
Kelly Ripa wondered whether it was hard for him to direct himself. He said that he has had lots of experience in his 24-year career. He also has made some short films; he bought himself Final Cut in for his 21st birthday, and said it was a lot of fun.
“Once you’re editing, you’re really making movies,” he said. “It’s exciting nowadays. You can just edit on your computer. You couldn’t do that when I was a kid.”

In the movie Don Jon, Gordon-Levitt is a selfish ladies’ man with issues; he uses the people around him and avoids connection. He stars opposite Scarlett Johansson, whose character has similar flaws.
Ripa praised the actors’ Jersey accents, and in a clip from the movie, the co-stars are shopping, and Johansson’s character is appalled to learn that he does his own housework. You can see Don Jon in theaters starting September 27.
