Live! With Kelly & Michael finished its “Kick Start the New Year: Fitness Edition” last week, so now they started with their “Kick Start the New Year: Nutrition Edition” on January 12 2015. For the New Year, they’re spending a week focusing on eating right. First, Dr. Loren Cordain came by to talk to Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan about the Paleo Diet, which I was really excited about. I know that the Paleo Diet is really popular right now, but I actually just don’t know too much about it. I just know that it’s pretty strict, so I was excited to see why it’s so popular right now. The Paleo Diet is the number one Googled diet.

Dr. Cordain talked about what we can do to be a part of “the caveman diet?” It’s not just for men. It’s for women and children, so it’s “cavepeople.” It’s not a diet. It’s a way of living.

Kelly & Michael: What Can You Eat On The Paleo Diet?
What can you eat? Grass-produced meats, which you do cook. You can also have seafood. Fresh fish is wonderful. You can also have vegetables in unlimited quantity, but you should watch grapes if you need to watch your insulin. Avocadoes are great. Eggs are also great. 20 years ago, they said not to eat them, but we know better now. Get free-range eggs and you can eat any amount and the whole egg. Nuts are good, but you can overdo it. They imbalance your fat. Balance it with salmon.
Kelly & Michael: What Can’t You Eat On The Paleo Diet?
What can’t you eat? You can’t have cereal grains. You can’t have white rice or corn flower. There’s also better foods than oatmeal. You can’t have quinoa. It was also surprising that you can’t have legumes. They’re edible when you cook them and our ancestors had to make fire to eat them. They cause inflammation.
You also can’t have dairy. It can lead to heart disease and some cancers. I’m not too sure about this diet. I like the idea of it, but it may be too strict for me. I do eat legumes and dairy. I’m a vegetarian, but some of the suggestions were good. You can get Dr. Cordain’s Real Paleo Diet Cookbook in March.
