The Railway Man is a true story about a British soldier who was captured during WWII. Firth was only vaguely aware of it. But there were so many people involved it should have been in the textbooks. There’s a lot about WWII, but not this. There was slavery in Thailand.

Firth’s character, Eric Lomax, was tortured in Thailand. It’s not a torture movie, though. You just get a sense of it, but it travels with him afterwards, and it affects his family. His wife was caring and loving but was being mentally tortured by his torture. Nicole Kidman played his wife. He was focused on revenge and vengeance. His character actually found out where his torturer was and went to Thailand to kill him.

Firth told Kelly and Michael that he and Kidman became close. “It’s an undeniable thing when you have an affinity for the person,” he said. They had to get to know each other quickly because of the work they did. He talked about how you meet at 7 in the morning, you kill them at 9, you marry them at 11, and then you have lunch. They had to get close to accomplish that.
