Kelly & Michael: Joey Chestnut and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas
Kelly & Michael continued “Summer Fun Week” with a visit from competitive eaters Joey Chestnut and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas. Michael talked about eating hot dogs and how competitive eaters eat over 60 in ten minutes. Nathan’s will have its annual hot dog eating contest on July 4 2014 on Coney Island. Joey Chestnut and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas are the reigning champs. They came out with their belts. “If you two want to impress us, you have to eat the belts,” Kelly said.
Joey Chestnut is number one in major league eating and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas is number five. Kelly didn’t get it because Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas is tiny. How do they look like that? Joey Chestnut said it’s a competition. When they’re not doing contests, they have to eat healthy. If they gain weight, they’ll start losing.
Kelly & Michael: Competitive Eating Training
Michael asked how they train if they’re not just eating hot dogs. Joey Chestnut fasts before every contest. He doesn’t have solid food for two days and does a practice and gets his body used to it. Kelly couldn’t handle it. She said that she thought fasting would shrink your stomach. It doesn’t shrink; the muscles become tense. When he’s fasting, he’s drinking a lot of liquids to keep it stretched and loose. Then when he does a practice he’s empty.
They talked about going from empty to full to empty again, and it was pretty gross. Kelly was just losing it.
Kelly & Michael: Competitive Eating History
Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas holds the record for eating 47 dozen oysters in eight minutes. That’s unbelievable. Kelly & Michael were losing it the entire time. You have to use the forks.
Michael asked how they got into this business. Joey Chestnut’s little brother made him do his first contest when he was in college because he would reward himself on the weekends and his brother knew he could eat more than anyone in the family. Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas said she has a big appetite. She saw a competition on the news and she just decided to try. Michael said she’d be an expensive date and that if she didn’t like the date, she’d be out of there in two minutes.
Joey Chestnut’s hot dog record is 69 hot dogs and buns in ten minutes. His girlfriend does some contests too, but Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas can beat her.
Kelly & Michael: Hosts Vs Champs
They wanted to see how long it takes all of them to eat one hot dog. Michael said he and Kelly had been fasting for three minutes, so they better watch out. Kelly said she doesn’t typically like encased meat, but she’ll do it for them. Kelly put spicy mustard on hers and Michael put spicy mustard and ketchup. Michael said they’re slow because they like to dress up their hot dogs.
The champs were done in a couple of seconds and Kelly & Michael were still working on their first bites. It was hilarious. Michael asked what they were doing wrong. Joey Chestnut said they were doing everything wrong. They were enjoying it, but this is a competition, not a picnic. They dip their hot dogs in the water.
Michael asked if they were going to a barbecue after the contest on the fourth of July. Joey Chestnut said he’ll have some beers. Kelly said she’d do better if they had beers before.
Kelly & Michael: Champs Challenge Each Other
Joey Chestnut and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas then challenged each other. They did a warm up contest of the most hot dogs eaten in one minute. They had to say a lot of legal stuff, like don’t try this at home, and they had EMT standing by. They told the audience to cheer them on. Michael said it’s hard to watch and Kelly said it was like a horror movie. They were holding each other. They were not into it at all.
They started with 12 hot dogs and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas had five and half left while Joey Chestnut had three and half left, so he won. Kelly said it was interesting to watch Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas because she had a dance while she was eating. You can watch Nathan’s hot dog eating contest live on ESPN News.
