It was an hour full of surprises for Katie Couric and her whole audience on the September 2 episode. In honor of Katie’s birthday (which was earlier this year, January 2), her team put together an entire hour where she knew nothing about what was going to happen. She was paired up with guest host Andy Cohen for a wild and crazy hour, featuring Betty White, Guy Fieri, and the Al Roker weight loss story. Here’s a look at what was on the show.

The theme of this episode was “Watch What Happens To Katie,” and the first thing that happened is Betty White swung onstage to have a cocktail with the birthday girl. Is there any occasion that can’t be improved a bit with a pinch of Betty White?
Katie Couric turned 56 in 2013, turning 33. Betty White turned 91 in 2013, and is celebrating 65 years on television. There is almost nothing this woman hasn’t done at this point. Betty even had her own talk show back in the early days of television, which featured singing, variety, and legitimate surprises.
Betty explained that TV was much more of a long haul in those days, and she did several live hours almost every day of the week. These days, you can watch her having fun with the cast of Hot In Cleveland.
Katie Couric: Al Roker Weight Loss
Katie’s former co-worker from Today Show, Al Roker, dropped in to wish his friend a happy birthday. He also spoke about his weight loss surgery on Katie Couric September 2. He said that some people have told him he was funnier before he lost weight. How rude!
Al Roker talked more about his personal story in the book Never Goin’ Back: Winning the Weight-Loss Battle for Good. Roker has also written a series of murder mystery novels featuring the character Billy Blessing.
Other fabulous surprises for Katie included J.R. Martinez, the war hero and Dancing with the Stars alum. Later, Guy Fieri cooked up some birthday goodies for Couric and everyone enjoyed a performance from the Big Apple Circus.
