GMA: Healthy Foods Fat Content
Everyone knows to avoid greasy foods if they’re trying to lose weight, but did you know that there are some healthy foods that can sabotage your diet as well? Rachel Beller, author of Eat to Lose, Eat to Win, said that there are natural foods that are high in calories can really mess up your diet.
One example of this is avocado, a super food that is loaded with antioxidants and fiber, but also high in fat. One avocado can contain 350 calories. Rachel Beller said to only use ¼ of an avocado for your salads.
Rachel Beller said nuts can be high in fat too, and just ¼ cup of walnuts contains 190 calories, which is the same as a glazed donut. Most people don’t stop eating at just ¼ cup of walnuts either, which doesn’t go very far on top of a salad.
Good Morning America: Red Wine Calories & Portion Control
In moderation, red wine has been linked to reduce risk for heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and certain kinds of cancers. However, a full glass is 200 calories.
Rachel Beller also suggests choosing fresh fruit over dried fruit, such as grapes over raisins. ½ cup of grapes is 30 calories, while ½ cup of raisins is 230 calories.
At the end of the day, you just need to be careful about portion control. Too much of a good thing can still lead to weight gain, but you shouldn’t eliminate these items from your diet. Just eat them in moderation.
